Well, I got the kids’ fall clothes in the drawers, so you can all go ahead and prepare for unseasonably warm temperatures for the next couple weeks.

I made it to Bible study with three kids. . . although I did forget my Bible, the snacks, the diaper bag, the money for childcare, and my purse.
‪#‎priorities‬

Just watched a bunch of beatbox videos with my 8 year-old. In retrospect, this was about as good of an idea as the time I introduced him to parkour videos.

The almost two year-old has learned the word “why.” And so it begins. . .

Danny (6): Mom, can I have Cheerios?
Me: No, it’s almost dinner time.
Danny: But MOM, they’re WHOLE GRAIN!

Tip for saving money on groceries: At least once a week make a meal that your kids don’t really like.

The almost 2 year-old had some potty-training success today. So I’m just going to ride that high for the next couple days.

Bethany (5): Mom, Teddy is the cutest baby in history. He’s like Abraham Lincoln. Except for the diaper.

Husband surprised me with a new Huskers t-shirt.

Heads-up: If you try to tell your kids that their room is a “pit”, but halfway through decide to say “mess” you may end up saying something you didn’t intend to say.

Me: You guys want to watch Popeye?
Bethany (5): What’s Popeye? OH! Is that the guy who eats lettuce and then punches?! YES!

This picture is from 4 years ago today when this little girl became my DAUGHTER. After caring for 19 boys (through group home work, adoption, and foster care), she ushered us into a whole new world and we couldn’t be more thankful. Happy Adoption Day, Bethany! You were just what we needed and we’re so thankful God brought you to us. What a blessing to be your mom!

5 kids potty-trained and 1 to go (next year). I feel like I’m seeing the light at the end of a diaper filled tunnel.

I’ve been reading “The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert” by Rosaria Butterfield. I had to laugh at her description of how a man responded to her chastising him on his insensitivity towards transracial adoption: “He stammered something unintelligible and backed away slowly, seeming to understand that even when the bear does not look like the cubs, the trauma of having one’s head ripped off by a protective mama can be bloody business.”

Joel (3): Guess what I drew.
Me: Is it an “O”?
Joel: Nice try, Mom! You forgot. It was a “D”.

I am sympathetic when my kids get hurt. . . except when they get hurt because they were wandering around the house with a blanket over their head.
‪#‎WHY‬

Eight years ago today I became a mom when this little boy was placed in my arms.
When he was five years-old I showed him this picture of him in Liberia before we adopted him. I said, “Josh, this is a picture of you when you were in Liberia. Look at the funny face you’re making.” Josh said, “I wasn’t making a funny face. I was praying that my mommy would come. That you would come get me.”
His understanding that kids need families is half the reason why we’ve ended up with the family we have. He gets it. And he reminds me that there are kids in Africa, China, Russia, kids in OUR CITY who are still praying that their mommy would come.
Happy Adoption Day, Josh! You started us on a life changing journey and we’re forever thankful.

Sometimes when you’re feeling down about not being able to lose the last of the baby weight, the only thing that will make you feel better is a spoon full of frosting.

Bethany (5): Mom, if I die today, will Jesus give me a computer in heaven? Even if I’m only five years-old?
Me: Ummmmmmm
Joel (3): I wish I was a teenager right now! Then I could punch! Punch! Punch! Punch!
Me: Ummmmmmmm

The bassinet just left the house (on loan to my sister). It feels oddly freeing and sad at the same time.

Danny (6): Mom, I didn’t come from your body. I came in a present.
(I promise he knows the truth about where he came from, but I love that he knows what a good gift he is.)

Joel (3): Mom, it smells like a cricket in my room.
Me: What? It sounds like a cricket?
Joel: No, it SMELLS like a cricket.
Me: Oh. . . what does a cricket smell like?
Joel: Poop.
